Do you need a solar battery in Dubai?
When a home battery makes sense with rooftop solar in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, what it does not do for savings, and what to ask installers.
Short answer: not for savings in Dubai, but possibly for peace of mind.
Why a battery does not add savings in Dubai
Under Shams Dubai net metering, the power your panels export is credited at the same retail rate you pay, and surplus credits roll over month to month. In effect, the grid already works like a free battery. Storing power yourself does not earn you more.
When a battery does make sense
- Backup during power cuts. A battery can keep chosen circuits running, such as the fridge, Wi-Fi and some lights.
- Energy security. In 2026, rising energy costs and concern about attacks on power infrastructure pushed more Gulf homeowners to look at solar and storage.
- Abu Dhabi. The 2026 self-supply policy covers rooftop solar and battery storage for villas, and export payment terms have not been published, so storing your own power may matter more there.
Questions to ask before you buy
- What is the usable capacity in kWh, and how many hours will it run my essential circuits?
- Which circuits will be backed up, and how fast does it switch over in a power cut?
- What battery chemistry is it, and what warranty in years and cycles?
- Is the battery and inverter combination accepted by DEWA or ADDC for my connection?
- What does the battery add to the price? Ask for it as a separate line in the quote.
