Is solar worth it in Dubai? An honest answer for 2026

Real payback numbers for Dubai and Abu Dhabi villas, for expats and UAE nationals, using current DEWA and ADDC tariffs.

It depends on two things: which tariff you pay and how much electricity you use. Solar removes your most expensive units first, so the bigger your bill and the higher your tariff, the faster it pays back.

Solar is usually worth it if

  • You own a villa in Dubai and pay DEWA's standard rates.
  • Your bill regularly goes above 4,000 kWh a month in summer.
  • You plan to stay at least five to eight years, or the system adds value when you sell.

Pros and cons of solar panels for your home in Dubai

ProsCons
Cuts your most expensive DEWA units firstUpfront cost of about AED 20,000 to 55,000 for a villa
Net metering credits exports at the retail rateLong payback on UAE national tariffs
Protects you from future tariff and fuel surcharge risesPanels need regular cleaning in dusty conditions
Optional battery adds backup during power cutsNeeds roof space, owner approval and DEWA approvals

Think twice if

  • You are a UAE national on subsidized rates: payback can run 30 years or more, so solar mainly makes sense if backup power matters to you.
  • You rent: you need the landlord's agreement, and the savings may not last as long as your lease.
  • You live in an apartment, where the roof is shared.
Beyond the money: many buyers in 2026 also want more control over their energy supply. A battery adds backup, but not savings, in Dubai. Read the battery guide.
