How to install solar panels on your villa in Dubai: step by step

The DEWA Shams Dubai process for rooftop solar, from first quote to connection, plus what to check on your roof before you start.

Solar panels installed on the flat roof of a villa in Dubai

Rooftop solar on a Dubai villa runs through DEWA's Shams Dubai program. You don't install anything yourself: a DEWA-enrolled consultant or contractor designs the system, handles the approvals and does the installation. Your job is to choose the right one.

Before you start: is your roof suitable?

  • You need to own the villa, or have the owner's written agreement if you rent.
  • Roof space and shading. Water tanks, AC units and nearby buildings or trees all reduce the usable area. Roof orientation and shading affect how much the system produces.
  • Roof condition. Fix waterproofing before panels go on, since they stay for decades.
  • Community rules. Ask your community or building management whether they need to approve changes to the roof.
  • Your bill. Note your average monthly kWh. It sets the right system size. Use our savings calculator.

The six steps, as DEWA describes them

  1. Choose a DEWA-enrolled consultant or contractor. They assess whether solar is feasible on your roof and recommend a system. Get at least three quotes. Compare DEWA-approved solar companies.
  2. Approvals. Your contractor obtains DEWA's no-objection certificate (NOC) to install and connect the system, and DEWA's approval of the system design.
  3. Installation. Only after approval does the contractor install the panels, inverter and wiring on site.
  4. Completion notice. The contractor notifies DEWA that the installation is finished.
  5. Inspection and meter. DEWA inspects the system and installs the meter that records power you import and export.
  6. Generation. You use your solar power first, export the surplus, and DEWA offsets exported units against imported ones on your bill.

How long it takes and what it costs

Published guides put the full process at a few weeks to several months, depending on system size. A typical villa system of 5 to 10 kWp costs about AED 20,000 to 55,000 installed. See solar panel installation cost in Dubai. One guide also lists a one-off DEWA connection fee of AED 1,500 (reported in 2018), so ask your installer to confirm current DEWA fees in the quote.

After installation

Dust reduces output in the UAE. DEWA guidance reported by Bayut suggests cleaning panels about every 15 days, with a specialist clean once a year. Ask whether cleaning and maintenance are included in your quote.

Not in Dubai? Abu Dhabi opened rooftop solar to villas in 2026: read the Abu Dhabi rules. In Sharjah, grid-tied solar needs SEWA approval.
